The basics of interview preparation haven't changed in a while. You dress for success, bring your resume with you, have interview questions answered in your head and know the company. The way interviews are done, however, has changed. The days of walking door to door and handing in your resumes are over. Even the way our interviews are done has changed. Whereas once it was only acceptable to have interviews in person, now phone interviews have become more popular.
So how does one set up interview preparation for a phone interview? A lot of us believe a good first impression is shown by wearing a freshly pressed shirt or clean hair-do. And we may be right. However, here are some interview tips for how to interview during and in preparation of a phone interview...
1. Research – Always research the company before your phone interview. Know who the CEO is, the name and title of your interviewer, the locations of the company, how big it is, etc.
2. Organize your thoughts - Know what you're going to say about yourself. Have your best features, biggest achievements, things to work on and relevant background work ready in your mind and on paper.
3. Sound check- Record your voice. Make sure you sound calm and are talking slowly. Many people rush through phone interviews because they are too nervous.
4. Find your location- try to be by a mirror and in an area where you can stand. This allows your voice to project more and gives you added confidence.
5. Organize your papers – Resume, cover letter, job advertisement, career portfolio, short list of your accomplishments and anything else relevant to the job should be laid out in front of you so everything is in easy reach.
6. Eliminate distractions – Lock your door, tell your roommates to leave you alone, turn off the computer, and put any pets in the living room. You do not want to zone out or be distracted when your interviewer asks a question.
7. Dress professionally – Even though no one can see you, this phone interview tips of being dressed in a professional manner can give the aura of importance and can make your speech more formal. Being dressed in business slacks and a button down shirt can also make you feel more confident about getting a job, which can come through in the way you talk and things you say to your future employer.
8. Be enthusiastic – But not fake! You are just another voice on the phone, so make sure that voice is memorable! Make them laugh, find something in common (a university, sorority or club you both were a part of, etc.), or just be friendly. Having a friendly disposition can really help the employer feel at ease with you and make them more attuned to getting to know you better.
9. Be ready to take notes – Whereas you most likely will not be quizzed at the end of the phone interview, it is always good to take notes on names mentioned, locations, etc.
10. Prepare a list of questions – Interviewers always like when people ask questions at the end of a phone interview. Write the questions you have before the phone interview, and add to them as the interview goes on.
11. Ask for a meeting in person – As you feel the phone interview wrapping up, acknowledge the fact that you know your interviewer is busy and only so much can be done over the phone. Ask if there is a time where you can meet in person to discuss farther the career opportunities available at the company.
12. Request contact information for follow-up questions and thank you letters – This interview tip shows you are interested in the company and very interested in the job. Do not forget to follow up!
Remember these interview tips on things NOT to do during a phone interview:
1. Do not smoke, chew gum, eat or drink during the phone interview
2. Avoid the overuse of "ah", "err", "hum", "uh" and "like"

Phone interviews are becoming increasingly popular as a means of narrowing down candidates for a more traditional face to face interview. In the ultra competitive society we now live, a job advertisement can attract hundreds of resumes from candidates with similar set of skills and backgrounds. The recruitment process is all about finding the one perfect candidate among the basket full of candidates. The phone interview has become a popular, flexible, inexpensive and speedy way of finding that one person.
Anna Press, a former recruitment agent with over 10 years experience in conducting telephone interviews shares her experiences below:
Preparing for a PHONE INTERVIEW
Before you begin your phone interview make sure that you are confident in your understanding of the position you are applying for and the company you are applying with. Do extra homework on the company's history and research recent company news. Preparation is the key and will make a great impression on your interviewers.
Prepare your Interview location. Make sure you're in a comfortable place with no distractions. Keep your resume in clear view, have a pen and pad to take notes and a glass of water sitting close by. Minimise any outside distractions that could potentially take your mind off the interview (HOT TIP: Disable call waiting on your phone). Dress the part so you feel and sound professional. The more professional you feel the more professional you will come across on the telephone.
Most importantly – Practice Interviewing. Rehearse and Practice. There are many ways to help you prepare for the telephone interview. Have a friend/ family member conduct an interview. Ideally, rehearse with someone from the same industry. The best way to hear how you sound is to tape yourself. Remember the more preparation you put into the interview the better prepared you will be.
Preparation is the key! Write down answers to questions you believe are going to be asked. Have questions ready to go so when the interviewer says "Do you have any questions to ask us" you're ready and prepared.
What to do during the phone interview:
- Remember to Smile. Experts say that smiling puts you in a better state of mind and will project a positive image to the listener
- Speak in a steady voice. Don't rush what you're trying to say. Ensure that you sound enthusiastic and passionate.
- Don't forget to breathe. It will help you stay calm and sound more relaxed.
- LISTEN – Answer the questions which are being asked. Do not make the mistake of telling the interviewer what you want to tell them. Give them the answers to their questions.
- Keep a glass of water handy – Nothing is worse than having a dry mouth
- Address the interviewer in the appropriate way. Do not shorten people's name. They are your potential employer not your "mate"
- Take your time – Don't rush the interview. This is your time to shine. If your feeling nervous take a moment or two to collect your thoughts
- "Cheat Notes" Prepare beforehand with notes to help drive you through the interview. If the interview is going to be technical than have notes ready to prompt yourself if needed
- Don't forget to ask questions.
What NOT to do during the interview:
- Don't eat, drink, chew gum
- DO NOT SMOKE
- Don't interrupt the interviewer.
- Don't answer with just a "yes" and "no"- elaborate your answers, provide examples if applicable
- Don't be too Casual/informal
- Long winded answers to questions
Conclusion:
The only way to master a phone interview is to practice, be professional, and show your passion for the job role. Remember you have made the phone interview stage so don't blow your interview by not being ready.
Good luck!

With all of the great candidates out there these days, employers have a lot from which to choose. Time spent interviewing increases, which drags out the selection process. One solution that many companies have tried are panel interviews.
A panel interview, also called a "group" or "team" interview is when you - the candidate - meets with two or more members of a team for an interview. If this idea terrifies you, don't stress! Here are three tips to help you succeed.
- Preparation - Before the interview, ask the scheduler for the names and titles of the interviewers. Just by knowing the various functions being represented in the interview will help you prepare for what types of questions could be asked. However, you could take it a step further and look them up on LinkedIn or Google to learn more about them. The more you know about your interviewers in advance, the better you can prepare yourself both strategically and mentally for the interview. Contemplate the mix of individuals and write practice questions that could come from each team member.
- Eye Contact - Each interview panel will have a leader whether it's formal or informal. It's easy to focus your attention on that person as they drive you through the process. But be sure to look at each person when you answer every question. Practice at home first by setting up targets around a table and pretend they are interviewers. Speak to each object and move around the table in a comfortable manner. Don't leave anyone out, especially the quietest member. By noticing and acknowledging everyone, it shows you can handle a team environment well.
- Interview them too - As you look around the table, imagine that you already have the job, this is your work group and you are at a group meeting. Consider how they interact with each other and see how it makes you feel. Is this a team where you could thrive? Interview them to see if they are a fit for your career goals too. This will help you to relax and enjoy the experience.
A panel interview is not much different than a regular work meeting. By following regular interview etiquette and these three tips, you should ace the interview and get the offer!
