Whether you have new employees or seasoned ones, they need to know what is expected of them to get the job done. When you start off by setting expectations correctly, you save time and money and get the job done properly.

    Identify what needs to be done, the steps that will be taken and what the finished product will look like.

    Decide on the time and place to set expectations, when you can give and receive the complete attention of the employee.

    Explain to the employee your full expectations. Tell them why the work is important and who is depending on the results. This could be other departments, customers, clients or your boss.

    Show the employee the steps that will be required to get the work done. This should include an actual demonstration and a sample of the finished product.

    Tell the employees who they can and need to consult and what equipment or materials they need. Either introduce them or give contact information for those contact people. Tell the employees what authority they have to make decisions about the process and materials.

    Ensure that the employees understand your expectations by having them explain what is required.

    Give them a deadline and let them know when you will check back for a progress report.
