The employee evaluation is a formal document that provides feedback on an employee's performance, behavior and ability to reach specific goals. The employee evaluation is also known as an employee performance evaluation, employee review or employee assessment. The employee evaluation may be linked to a salary increase, performance bonus or a promotion.

Function
  1. The primary purpose of an employee evaluation is to assess an employee's performance over a period of time. An organization may conduct employee evaluations or assessments at several intervals throughout the year to determine how well an employee is meeting their individual or team's performance goals for the period. Employee evaluations are typically conducted by a supervising manager and the human resources manager of an organization, but some sections may also include assessments from an employee's co-workers or department heads of an organization.
  2. Features

  3. The employee evaluation typically consists of; general criteria such as attendance, communication skills; position-specific criteria such as business skills, project management, proficiency, and attention to detail; supervisor's comments that evaluate strengths and weaknesses; a listing of goals; an area for the employee's signature that the evaluation took place and that they understood all areas of the evaluation. The employee evaluation is maintained in an employee's personnel file which is maintained by the supervising manager and/or human resources personnel.
  4. Effects

  5. The employee evaluation serves as a formal evaluation of an employee's abilities and overall performance. This information can be recorded for future review and may provide insights and information on an employee's workload and productivity levels, and whether the employee would be a good candidate for further career growth with a company. The employee's manager or supervisor can then set realistic goals to improve performance and ensure that the employee is on the right track.
  6. Considerations

  7. An employee evaluation is a confidential document. Employee evaluations give organizations a chance to map out goals, objectives and set standards for performance. The evaluation may include an in-depth assessment of an employee's personnel file for any indications of behavioral problems, productivity, and documentation of time card reports.
Any written reports or logs may also be used to support recommendations or assessments in the employee evaluation. The employee evaluation is typically conducted at the 90-day mark and then once per year. Some organizations choose to evaluate employees every quarter.
  8. Benefits

  9. Evaluating employees with a formal employee evaluation or appraisal is an essential process for organizations interested in retaining strong employees. The process can provide objective feedback about an employee's performance, behavior, quality of work, productivity and potential for career growth.
The employee benefits from a formal evaluation because he has a chance to express any concerns about his position, understand how his behavior or work style is perceived by management/coworkers, and learn which skills he needs to improve in order to advance in the company and/or be given salary increases.
