You are bound to run into some blogs with some comments made from outsiders. What do those comments say about this company? Do they treat their employees poorly?
2. Google Search - Google provides the same available analysis on your employer, but always shows different links than Yahoo and almost always has a different count of inbound links. Google will tend to reflect that a higher number of websites are linking to the company being researched than Yahoo will. To do your background check via Google, simply go to the search engine homepage and type the following into the browser:
Links:www.yourpotentialemployersite.com
The main advantage of the backlink trick is to find research tools that would have come up on the 14th page of a Google search and, therefore you would have never seen them. People die, but a companies or person's reputation on the web stays readily alive and available to anyone who wants to and knows how to pry.
Trick #3 Main Business Directory Inclusions
DMOZ Listing - dmoz.org is a web directory that was started by Netscape which is subsequently now owned by AOL. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious web directories to get listed in. For online reputation, it has been reported that volunteer website editors of the directory have been approached by companies offering up to $30,000 under the table to be listed.
More likely than not, your firm is not going to be listed, however if it is, it says a lot about the respect the firm has within the online world. Typically, this also translates into real-world success.
Yahoo Directory - dir.yahoo.com - it is commonplace for nearly all firms to pay Yahoo to be included in their directory. If your firm is not listed, that means that they may not be focusing on their marketing efforts in the least. If you take the job, be cognizant of the fact that they may be prone to losing out to competition via the front line battles of business: the web.
Since the Yahoo Directory is updated a lot more frequently than DMOZ, this will give you a perfect idea as to who the exact competitors are of the company that you are seeking employment with.
Knowledge gained as a result from these research avenues: history of the people who work at the company, almost all articles written that reference the firm, blogs discussing the industry and how the individuals reference the organization, who the main competitors of the company really are, whether or not the firm is "on the map," past business ventures and subsequent success, how popular the company is with industry insiders (directory makers), awards or penalties that the company has incurred, law-suits, online reputation and a whole lot more. Believe it or not, this research takes all of ½ hour and will give you a big advantage over the interviewing competition.
